A bit of a departure from beauty products for a tech review. I love my gadgets and by all means I’m an over-buyer. So it baffles me that it took this long to purchase the Bose QuietComfort 25 Headphones. I’ve only owned them for 2 weeks but they are easily one the best investments I’ve made.
- Significant noise reduction for travel, work and anywhere in between
- Deep, powerful sound for the music you love
- Lightweight around-ear fit you can wear all day long
- Control your music and calls with inline mic/remote
- Distinctive design, in Black and White, or customize your own headphones with a variety of color options using the ColorWare design tool (for Apple version only)
While traveling last month, I packed the headphones that came with my HTC One M8. They do the job quite well except for one thing: the detachable ear covers. At some point during the trip one of them came loose rendering the set useless till I came back home and found the backup pieces. I wasn’t going to get on a 16-hour flight without headphones so I walked into the SFO airport duty-free store.
My initial plan was to buy a pair of Apple earphones but I decided to take a look at the Bose headphones. After all, every seasoned traveller needs a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. And unlike Dubai airport, they had demo units of all the headphones available that I could hook up to my phone and test. Shame on you Dubai Duty Free!
The Bose QC25 headphones feature active noise-canceling (ANR) that is powered by a single AAA battery. And in case the battery dies (lasts up to 35 hours of listening), the headphones continue to work – only the ANR gets deactivated.
I always found over-the-ear headphones to be big and bulky but the QuietComfort 25 headphones fold up compactly into a pretty little carrying case. Bose also hooks you up with an airplane port adapter so you can use your own headphones instead of the dinky ones in the plane. They are also comfortable to wear and you can tell these won’t fall apart anytime soon. The headphones are made of leather and I picked up the pair in white and blue so they are stylish. Sure they won’t fit in your handbag, but I take them to work everyday and use them at the gym as well.
And then the sound. Bose obviously is the market leader in sound engineering and I’m no expert in bass or treble tones but these work great whether I’m on the phone with someone or blasting Bollywood tunes in the gym. Without the noise-cancelling on, I still get great sound and with the ANR on, it’s like I’m in my own world. While on the flight, I kept my headphones on with ANR without playing music and slept like a baby. It was the first time I didn’t have to contend with the deafening noise from the plane engines. I also use the Dubai Tram everyday so this makes those rides even better silencing the annoying announcements. They also open up after your first 100 hours of listening, so expect the sound to get better after a week or two.
If I have to give a negative, it’s the remote. The default ones are made for the Apple ecosystem (iPhone/iPad/Mac) and won’t work with your Android device. You’ll be able to use the play/pause button but for volume, you’ll need to fish out your phone. However, Bose have come out with an Android-specific version which should be available soon in Dubai.
If you’re a frequent traveler or listen to music while working, I can’t recommend the Bose QuietComfort 25 headphones enough – they put me “in the zone” right away. Yes, they are a bit pricey retailing at USD 299/AED 1299, but once you start using them, you’ll be hooked. They also make an excellent gift for the man/woman in your life – highly recommended.
