2012 Beauty Awards: Best in Skincare

The best painting needs a clean canvas to start with. In the same way, to get the most out of your makeup, you need a great base. And that’s where the importance of skincare comes in.

Makeup Remover

WINNER: Bioderma Sensibio H2O Makeup Remover & Cleanser – A favorite of models and beauty bloggers across the globe, this has been my go-to remover for the past 2 years. It’s come to the point where I buy it in the largest packaging available. The most gentle makeup remover, it is perfect for daily use and takes off mascara and eyeliner in a cinch. Unlike other removers, there is no irritation and no tightness. Available at most pharmacies in the UAE.

  • Honorable Mention: Mac Cleanse Off Oil – Bioderma is great for almost all cases but if you’re doing a lot of heavy makeup or using waterproof products, you need an oil-based product. This is where Mac’s Cleanse Off Oil will cut through the heaviest makeup. The best way to apply is using a pre-moistened wipe that allows the oil to emulsify into a cleansing fluid.

Facial Cleanser

WINNER: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser – I like my cleansers to be basic. A little bit of foam and leave my skin feeling fresh but not stripped of oil and Kiehl’s works perfectly for that. I use this on my Clarisonic in the morning and in the evening to take off any remaining makeup. I even have a backup in smaller packaging from the airport Kiehl’s counter for traveling.

  • Honorable Mention: Mario Badescu Glycolic Foaming Cleanser – Glycolic acid is one of those miracle ingredients that can work wonders on your skin. So when Gilt was having a Mario Badescu sale, I ordered this one up. This cleanser is a little different in that it is meant to be used only once or twice a week. I use this when I need a stronger tone up and my skin feels extra refreshed.

WINNER: Lush Ocean Salt – I packed this with me during my summer trip and it was a godsend. The salt-based exfoliator leaves your skin crystal clean as if you quickly regenerated a brand new layer. I absoutely love the lime scent and it also doubles as a body scrub!

  • Honorable Mention: L’Occitaine Brightening Instant Exfoliator – I just covered this in a recent review and if you want something a little less abrasive, this is for you. Great for sensitive skin, think of this as an instant facial.

Day Moisturizer

WINNER: Olay Complete – I’ve used this moisturizer for 5+ years now and have never been tempted to even try another one. I stock this up during Boots’ 3 for 2 sales. Based upon the bestselling Olay Fluid, this version includes SPF 15. You can’t go wrong with a product your mom and grandma used!

Facial Wipes

WINNER: Huggies Baby Wipes – Why spend 20-30 AED when baby wipes work perfectly well. I used to get really annoyed when I’d buy expensive makeup removing wipes only to find that they were dried up or didn’t get makeup off. Basic baby wipes are great for sensitive skin and are cheap so you never feel guilty using a second one.

Night Cream

WINNER: Kaya Hyaluronic Moisturizing Serum – Thanks to Kaya, I’ve been hooked on to this serum. A few drops of this after my evening face wash, and my skin is set. I wake up in the morning to a fresh face.

  • Honorable Mention: Lush Shangri-La – my ex-favorite before Kaya. You only need a small wipe of the super-rich moisturzer to give your skin some serious TLC. Anytime my skin is especially dry, I use this get it back into shape.

Mario Badescu Glycolic Toner – I don’t really understand the need for toners.  All the ones I used previously (Nivea, Loreal, Clinique) use to leave my skin burning. MB leaves my skin freshened and prevents my face from getting oily throughout the day.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion – A must-have in any skincare kit. I don’t get much acne but when I do, it’s a stress pimple in time for a big day. I apply the sulfur based drying solution at night and wake up to a shrunken, almost non existent pimple the next day.

Lush Fresh Face Masks – I’ve only recently started to appreciate spa facials but these still remain my prefered treatment anytime before a big event.  The masks are freshly made and need to be stored in the fridge and consumed within a few weeks. My favorites are Love Lettuce and Brazened Honey.

Kate Sommerville ExfoliKate – I had heard many great things about this so finally picked it up at Sephora in the US this summer. This is an very strong exfoliator and hence I prefer using it as an occasionally face mask. This works when the gel warms up during application leaving a tingly sensation that gives you an incredible glow.
