Tuesday Tip – Issue 13 – Makeup Organization

I caught this video from Huda Beauty and couldn’t resist sharing.

I’m usually pretty organized but I did find the tips quite helpful:

  1. Toss expired products. Shelf-life for products are:
    Powders = 2 years, Liquid = 1 years, Eyeliner, Mascara = 3-6 months
  2. Throw away unused products.  My personal rule for this if you haven’t used it in a year, toss it!
  3. For every new product, toss an old.
  4. Store daily and special wear products in separate bins.

My personal preference for makeup storage are those clear mini drawers. Perfect for indulging my OCD!

Tuesday Tip – Issue 12 – DIY Tinted Moisturizer

If you are a regular reader of the blog you know I’m a big fan of tinted moisturizer.  Provided you eat well and take care of your skin, most of us don’t need anything more than tinted moisturizer and concealer on a daily basis. Save time and money by only using foundation for special night outs or occasions.

Tinted Moisturizer (TM) should do two things: be a great moisturizer and match your complexion seamlessly. Some of my favorites are Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, theBalm and Urban Decay.  Unfortunately some people complain that either the color doesn’t match or it isn’t moisturizing enough.  So here are a couple of options:

1. If you need more moisture, layer TM over your regular moisturizer.  Just give the moisturizer a few minutes to absorb before applying the TM.

2. If you have sensitive skin, mix your shade of mineral foundation with your favorite moisturizer.  I like the one from Bare Escentuals with a lightweight moisturizer like Olay.

3. If you need more coverage, take a full-coverage foundation and dilute it down. Make sure you get an exact foundation match otherwise it won’t look good. I like Revlon ColorStay and Lush Shangri-La for this combination.

Tuesday Tip – Issue 11 – Clean your phone!

Beauty/fashion is only one of my many addictions and anyone that knows me will tell you I am obsessed with technology and gadgets. You will always find my iPhone or BlackBerry Torch within reaching distance of me at all times.

Sometime back I had noticed a lot more breakouts on the right side of my cheek.  I couldn’t figure out why one side of was more prone to breakouts and proceeded to blame my sleeping habits. I attempted to ensure that I treated my cheeks the same but there was still no improvement and then it came to me, it was my iPhone!

The iPhone, BB Torch and most smartphones these days have large touchscreens.  Using them heavily means that all the germs from our hands get transferred and accumulated on the screen. And as a result, transfer to our face when making/receiving a call. Think about it, we tend to clean our desks, toilets and even computers but when was the last time you disinfected your phone?

To keep you and your gadget bacteria-free, I suggest 2 things.

First, use an alcohol-based sanitizer once a week to disinfect your phone. I use a squirt of Bath and Body works hand sanitizer on a kleenex to wipe off the screen, but you can purchase specialized phone wipes as well.

Second, avoid cheek-to-screen contact.  I keep an extra headset in my handbag/office desk for phone calls or use the speakerphone functionality. It might seem inconvenient but it’s a small price to pay for acne-free skin.

Happy gadgeting!

Tuesday Tip – Issue 10 – Manic Mani/Pedi

Apologies for missing out on last week’s Tuesday Tip. I got too caught up in birthday celebrations to leave aside time for blogging, but it did give me an inspiration for this week’s Tuesday Tip!

Considering that I left work early on Thursday and had plenty of time to get ready, 5 minutes before I had to leave the house for my party I realized that I had forgotten to give myself a manicure and pedicure. And how could I let myself leave the house with non-glam hands and toes?

Learning from past mistakes I knew that painting my nails before going out was a bad idea, so I decided to play off my natural nails.  I filed and buffed out any anomalies and then grabbed my Body Shop cuticle oil pen to add some shine.  Thanks to adding Omegas 3,6,9 supplements to my diet, my natural nails are strong and white, and the cuticle oil made my hands look like they had a French manicure.

The feet were another story.  Thanks to intense gym workouts and dark polishes, my toe nails were too shy to go bare.  Instead of hunkering down to paint all 10 toes, I first put on my heels to figure out which nails would be exposed; turned out it was only the first three.  I also skipped the normal dark red crème and opted for a funky glittery nailpolish.  The great thing about glitters is that it makes it much harder to notice a rushed polish job, so I always keep a bottle of silver glitter (try RBL’s Frugalista) and gold glitter (try Deborah Lippmann’s Superstar) polish for when I’m in a rush.

So next time you are running late, go glam but with a shortcut!

Tuesday Tip – Issue 9 – Hippie Headbands

The latest trend the celebrities are rocking this summer are hippie headbands. I like these since they seem to fit in with the summer fashion much better than the preppy headbands favored by Blair of Gossip Girl.  They are especially great to add a pop of color to an otherwise plain outfit.

So next time you are wondering what to do with your hair, channel your inner hippie!
