Coming Soon: Teri Meri Kahaani & Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Summer blockbuster season is definitely upon us. While we’ve been a little swamped and only managed to catch Men in Black III (a very entertaining watch) and Prometheus (still figuring that one out but recommended for Alien fans) so far, but we’ll definitely be heading to the cinema this weekend for the latest releases.

teri meri kahaani 187x300 Coming Soon: Teri Meri Kahaani & Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

This week’s Bollywood release is Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani starring Priyanka Chopra and our all-time favorite Shahid Kapoor featuring love stories across three different time periods.

Teri Meri Kahaani brings together Shahid and Priyanka after their last release Kaminey. The music is already a hit with chartbusters with our personal favorite being “Humse Pyaar Karle Tu”.

The world premiere of Teri Meri Kahaani will also be taking place in  our backyard at VOX cinemas in Mall of Emirates on June 20th. Don’t forget to head over to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Shahid Kapoor!

abraham lincoln vampire hunter 212x300 Coming Soon: Teri Meri Kahaani & Abraham Lincoln: Vampire HunterThis week’s Hollywood release is an interesting one, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Now admittedly we are fans of anything that has to do with vampires having seen all episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and The Vampire Diaries but the 16th president of the United States as a vampire slayer is still beyond my imagination.

That being said, having caught the theatrical trailer in 3D during Prometheus, I’m very interested in this one. Can you imagine if they started teaching about Lincoln’s vampire battles during high school American history classes? I’m sure students’ grades would skyrocket upwards!

So which movie are you planning to catch this weekend? Vote below:

And since we adore Shahid, we leave you with a snippet of Teri Meri Kahaani - complete with English subtitles.

Movie Review: Mausam

Since seeing Shahid in person, I’ve been counting down the days to watching Mausam. The directorial debut of Pankaj Kapur and starring Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, Mausam has been heavily promoted and anticipated as a “timeless love story.”

Mausam tracks the love story of Captain Harinder “Harry” Singh (Shahid Kapoor) and Aayat Khan (Sonam Kapoor) and is divided into four seasons.  The movie starts in 1992 and tracks the star-crossed lovers over 10 years as they are separated and reunited in different countries.

Pankaj Kapur has made a movie of a different era and hence Mausam has an old-fashioned feel to it.  There is no overt sexuality in the romance, and it evolves slowly. Even the plot takes its leisurely time (at a runtime of almost 3 hours) to unfold.  And while these aspects may be appreciated by some, it is also Mausam‘s downfall.

While the premise is good, Mausam is hampered by the execution and mainly the screenplay.  In an effort to add humor or multiple dimensions, the movie gets too long and has its impact diluted.  Certain sequences get very cheesy and remind you of Indian movies from the 80s and 90s, i.e. hand paralysis (Hum Saath Saath Hain) and the feris wheel/horse sequence.

Pankaj Kapur does manage to make Mausam unique by interweaving the love story with key historical events like Ayodhya, Bombay bomb blasts, the Kargil war, September 11th, and the Ahmedabad riots. However, these do seem excessive and occasionally exploitive of serious issues.

Any love story rests strongly on the performance and chemistry of the lead pair.  Shahid Kapoor does an excellent job in an author-backed role.  He oozes charm in the first portion as the young country boy, and manages to exude a unique combination of hotness/seriousness as the air force pilot, even though the CGI sequences let him down).  Sonam Kapoor doesn’t have the acting maturity needed for this role and you can’t help but feel that Kareena Kapoor could have played Aayat better than her and lent in the gravitas the role needed.  Sonam looks ethereal in the Scotland portion, but her styling as a Kashmiri refugee detracts from her beauty. Unfortunately, the pair’s chemistry falls extremely flat. When the lovers are separated, the audience isn’t pushed to root for them to reunite.

Mausam is unfortunately a disappointment.  It is better than the last major Bollywood release, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, but only marginally so. If you are in the mood for a simple romance plus a mini-history lesson, go for it.

Synopsis:

Four seasons.
Four colours.
Four phases of their lives.
Four true historical events.

Mausam (Seasons of Love) is a story of timeless love in the face of political hostilities and religious conflict, between a proud Punjabi Air Force Officer, Harry (Shahid Kapoor) and an innocent Kashmiri refugee, Aayat (Sonam Kapoor).

Set against a landscape that transcends a decade and spans continents, Mausam is a classic journey that transports one into a world of indestructible bonds of love enveloped by the roulette of destiny.

In its First Season, the film begins with mere adolescent attraction between Harry and Aayat, in a small village of Punjab. In Season Two it develops into young love; Their love realizes its own depth in the hours of separation through Season Three. In the Fourth and Final Season their love culminates into togetherness, but not before sacrificing a lot personally and learning the truth behind universal love. It is a passionate love story, with various shades of life as its background, questioning us and yet not becoming indulgent.

Written and Directed by Pankaj Kapur and produced by Eros Entertainment, the film released worldwide on September 23rd, 2011.

Dollz Meets Shahid Kapoor

Sometime dreams come true.

As a reader of the blog, you are probably familiar with my love (bordering on obsession) for Shahid Kapoor. Not just the blog readers, but I think a good portion of Dubai and the remaining world know how much I adore him. And recently, my dream of meeting Shahid finally came true.

Thanks to the folks at Market Buzz, I was invited to attend the Mausam press conference at the 123rd floor of the Burj Khalifa on September 3rd. (Yes, it took me 2 weeks to get over the euphoria of meeting Shahid to finally put together coherent words for a blog post. Apologies!)

For those of you coming in late, Mausam is Shahid’s latest movie directed by his father Pankaj Kapur and produced by Sunil Lulla of Eros Entertainment. The synopsis is below:

Four seasons.

Armed with an old copy of Shahid covering a Filmfare magazine, a video camera, a digital camera, two cell phones, and a copy of Jab We Met, I sat down in the front row of the press con for Shahid to arrive. And just a few minutes after the scheduled time, Mr. Kapoor walked in.

Clad in his signature blue jeans, white button down, and black blazer, the first thing you are overtaken by is his gorgeous and infectious smile that managed to brighten up that room. I don’t think there was a single woman in the room that didn’t melt at that smile. You then realize that even though he’s a bonafide star with megahits such as Vivaah, Jab We Met, and Kaminey behind him, he has no stary airs.  During the viewing of Mausam‘s promos, he refused to take someone’s seat and cutely remarked that he “gets nervous watching his own promos”.

Considering this is his father’s directorial debut, Shahid took considerable time speaking about his experience with his dad. His tone and words reflected the pride and admiration he has for his dad.  It was also very clear that Mausam isn’t just another film but “the most important film of my [Shahid's] career.”

Battling nerves and a croaky voice, I managed to ask Shahid about the music of his film, which has become a commercial and critical success thanks to Pritam’s beautiful songs, including the bhangra number “Saj Dhaj Ke”, playful “Rabba” and romantic “Ik Tu”.  He responded with saying that “Pritam has always created magical tracks for me” and “the picturization will elevate the music to another level.”

Mausam was scheduled for a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and worldwide release on September 16th. However due to an objection by the Indian Air Force, the film’s release was delayed by a week and now opens in Dubai on September 22nd and worldwide on September 23rd. Book your tickets now as I’m sure this will be a good one!

And what can I say about Shasha. He might be a little shorter than I expected, but my heart still melts at every mention of him. Inshallah, in the not so distant future, there will be a proper one-on-one interview with him for Dollz in Dubai. But until then, my heart is content with him having flashed that gorgeous smile at me.

P.S. I have 2 copies of the phenomenal Mausam soundtrack to giveaway. If you live in the UAE and would like a copy, drop me an email at dollzindubai@gmail.com.

P.P.S. Big thank you to Mita at Market Buzz for the invite and the folks at Filmfare ME for the event.

Movie Review: Mere Brother Ki Dulhan

Yash Raj films latest release, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (MBKD), premiered in Abu Dhabi yesterday.  Thanks to Masala magazine, I was given a chance to meet-and-greet the stars of the movie: Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar, followed by tickets to the world premiere.

MBKD boasts of an excellent soundtrack, eye-catching promos and a fresh, young cast.  All these factors gave the feeling that the film would kick-off the next few months of festive blockbuster releases.

MBKD is the story of how Luv (Ali Zafar) asks his brother Kush (Imran Khan) to find him a bride, that turns out to be Dimple (Katrina Kaif). With three headlining stars, it isn’t hard to guess how this love triangle plot pans out.  And that’s exactly MBKD’s main flaw.

While watching MBKD, you can’t help but be reminded of some past Bollywood blockbustersnamely 2007′s Jab We Met. There are ample visuals of rural India, references to running away, and even glimpses of Kareena Kapoor’s Geet in Dimple and Shahid Kapoor’s Aditya in Kush. While the actors in MBKD have done justice to their roles, they aren’t given any depth that makes you connect with them.

The first half of the movie is extremely predictable and about 30% of the audience at the premiere had decided that was enough for them.  The second half is marginally better thanks to some spirited acting. Sohail Sen’s soundtrack has some excellent chartbusters that are well-choreographed and executed.  Bonus points for the choreography in the title track featuring Imran Khan pulling off Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan’s signature moves.

All three actors get significant screen time.  Katrina excels in her rocker chic avatar and seems to have developed a flare for comedy.  Imran Khan is dependable and likeable as always and has a great chemistry with Katrina. Ali Zafar has a unique style of acting, atypical to most Bollywood stars, but unfortunately gets hammy in a few scenes.  Tara D’Souza as Pyali/Pia does a great job and looks enticing in “Do Dhaari Talwar.”

If you are bored this weekend and have nothing better to do, head to the cinema or watch the Yash Raj Films last and more superior movie, Band Baaja Baraat.

Happy Valentine’s Day! [Warning: contains numerous Shahid references]

Whether you hate it or love it, there is one thing for sure, you can’t ignore Valentine’s Day.  Yesterday I had decided that I would avoid the usual bouts of emotional anxiety on this day by simply ignoring it.  Alas, I failed.

I started the drive to work this morning with one of the most romantic Hindi songs coming on the radio, “Suraj Hua Maddham” from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.  If this song doesn’t make you feel romantic, you must be made of stone.

Then, as I was scrolling through my Twitter timeline, I found a tweet linking me to the First Look poster of Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming film, Mausam.

(In case you need a refresher on my Shahid Kapoor obsession, please refer to this post.)  Mausam has Shahid playing an Air Force pilot and it’s rumored to have some similarities to the Tom Cruise classic, Top Gun. I’m still undecided on the mustache but who can resist a handsome man in uniform? The other coincidence (?) is the release date of the movie: July 22nd in India, and as a result July 21st in the UAE.  I’ll let you figure out why that date is special icon smile Happy Valentines Day! [Warning: contains numerous Shahid references]

And then during the mid-morning lull I received an email from my Dad with the following link:

Yes, my dear Dad is sending me video links of my favorite actor. How adorable is that?

So yes, I failed in ignoring Valentine’s Day. While the first “sign” might not be Shahid Kapoor related, the latter two have convinced me to officially crown Shahid Kapoor as my Valentine this year.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all the singles and couples. And if you’re feeling a little blue today, this might cheer you up!
