Dollz Meets Shahid Kapoor

Sometime dreams come true.

As a reader of the blog, you are probably familiar with my love (bordering on obsession) for Shahid Kapoor. Not just the blog readers, but I think a good portion of Dubai and the remaining world know how much I adore him. And recently, my dream of meeting Shahid finally came true.

Thanks to the folks at Market Buzz, I was invited to attend the Mausam press conference at the 123rd floor of the Burj Khalifa on September 3rd. (Yes, it took me 2 weeks to get over the euphoria of meeting Shahid to finally put together coherent words for a blog post. Apologies!)

For those of you coming in late, Mausam is Shahid’s latest movie directed by his father Pankaj Kapur and produced by Sunil Lulla of Eros Entertainment. The synopsis is below:

Four seasons.
Four colours.
Four phases of their lives.
Four true historical events.

Mausam (Seasons of Love) is a story of timeless love in the face of political hostilities and religious conflict, between a proud Punjabi Air Force Officer, Harry (Shahid Kapoor) and an innocent Kashmiri refugee, Aayat (Sonam Kapoor).

Set against a landscape that transcends a decade and spans continents, Mausam is a classic journey that transports one into a world of indestructible bonds of love enveloped by the roulette of destiny.

In its First Season, the film begins with mere adolescent attraction between Harry and Aayat, in a small village of Punjab. In Season Two it develops into young love; Their love realizes its own depth in the hours of separation through Season Three. In the Fourth and Final Season their love culminates into togetherness, but not before sacrificing a lot personally and learning the truth behind universal love. It is a passionate love story, with various shades of life as its background, questioning us and yet not becoming indulgent.

Armed with an old copy of Shahid covering a Filmfare magazine, a video camera, a digital camera, two cell phones, and a copy of Jab We Met, I sat down in the front row of the press con for Shahid to arrive. And just a few minutes after the scheduled time, Mr. Kapoor walked in.

Clad in his signature blue jeans, white button down, and black blazer, the first thing you are overtaken by is his gorgeous and infectious smile that managed to brighten up that room. I don’t think there was a single woman in the room that didn’t melt at that smile. You then realize that even though he’s a bonafide star with megahits such as Vivaah, Jab We Met, and Kaminey behind him, he has no stary airs.  During the viewing of Mausam‘s promos, he refused to take someone’s seat and cutely remarked that he “gets nervous watching his own promos”.

Considering this is his father’s directorial debut, Shahid took considerable time speaking about his experience with his dad. His tone and words reflected the pride and admiration he has for his dad.  It was also very clear that Mausam isn’t just another film but “the most important film of my [Shahid's] career.”

Battling nerves and a croaky voice, I managed to ask Shahid about the music of his film, which has become a commercial and critical success thanks to Pritam’s beautiful songs, including the bhangra number “Saj Dhaj Ke”, playful “Rabba” and romantic “Ik Tu”.  He responded with saying that “Pritam has always created magical tracks for me” and “the picturization will elevate the music to another level.”

Mausam was scheduled for a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and worldwide release on September 16th. However due to an objection by the Indian Air Force, the film’s release was delayed by a week and now opens in Dubai on September 22nd and worldwide on September 23rd. Book your tickets now as I’m sure this will be a good one!

And what can I say about Shasha. He might be a little shorter than I expected, but my heart still melts at every mention of him. Inshallah, in the not so distant future, there will be a proper one-on-one interview with him for Dollz in Dubai. But until then, my heart is content with him having flashed that gorgeous smile at me.

P.S. I have 2 copies of the phenomenal Mausam soundtrack to giveaway. If you live in the UAE and would like a copy, drop me an email at dollzindubai@gmail.com.

P.P.S. Big thank you to Mita at Market Buzz for the invite and the folks at Filmfare ME for the event.

Bollywood September Issue Face-Off

While there is always plenty of coverage for the September issue cover wars in the West, India is slowly catching up to the trend and giving us some exciting covers to gawk at.

This year’s September issues went to Katrina Kaif (Elle), Sonam Kapoor (Harper’s Bazaar) and Nargis Fakhri (Vogue).  Katrina and Sonam both have big movie releases coming up with Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Mausam respectively. Nargis will be debuting with Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar, releasing later this year. (In case you missed it, check out our round-up of upcoming Bollywood releases.)

Back to the cover wars. While Nargis looks good in the green Versace dress, she doesn’t have enough Bollywood credentials to merit a place in this face-off. So we’ll discount her until we manage to watch Rockstar.

Both covers have a dark, fall theme with the actresses rocking the trendy, dark, crimson lip.  For me, Katrina wins.  Her face has a touch of attitude, but her dress gives her innocence.  While Sonam looks gorgeous, the whole cover seems a little sad to me (including her boobs).  Although, The Daily Honey (whom the photos are from) did point out Katrina’s missing armpit thanks to Photoshop.  Nevertheless, we still crown Katrina the winner. And we have to admit, she is our favorite in the current Bollywood crop especially thanks to this awesome song from MBKD, which we will spotlight for #MusicMonday:

Happy Valentine’s Day! [Warning: contains numerous Shahid references]

Whether you hate it or love it, there is one thing for sure, you can’t ignore Valentine’s Day.  Yesterday I had decided that I would avoid the usual bouts of emotional anxiety on this day by simply ignoring it.  Alas, I failed.

I started the drive to work this morning with one of the most romantic Hindi songs coming on the radio, “Suraj Hua Maddham” from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.  If this song doesn’t make you feel romantic, you must be made of stone.

Then, as I was scrolling through my Twitter timeline, I found a tweet linking me to the First Look poster of Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming film, Mausam.

(In case you need a refresher on my Shahid Kapoor obsession, please refer to this post.)  Mausam has Shahid playing an Air Force pilot and it’s rumored to have some similarities to the Tom Cruise classic, Top Gun. I’m still undecided on the mustache but who can resist a handsome man in uniform? The other coincidence (?) is the release date of the movie: July 22nd in India, and as a result July 21st in the UAE.  I’ll let you figure out why that date is special icon smile Happy Valentines Day! [Warning: contains numerous Shahid references]

And then during the mid-morning lull I received an email from my Dad with the following link:

Yes, my dear Dad is sending me video links of my favorite actor. How adorable is that?

So yes, I failed in ignoring Valentine’s Day. While the first “sign” might not be Shahid Kapoor related, the latter two have convinced me to officially crown Shahid Kapoor as my Valentine this year.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all the singles and couples. And if you’re feeling a little blue today, this might cheer you up!
