Movie Review: Django Unchained

s3.amazonaws.com images.hitfix.com assets 1664 DjangoUnchainedOfficialPosterPT 202x300 Movie Review: Django UnchainedWith the awards season in full swing as shown by our Red Carpet coverage, this is the month of catching up on this year’s Oscar nominated biggies.  Last week, thanks to the folks at Empire films, I got a chance to see Django Unchained at its Dubai premiere at Reel Cinemas, Dubai Mall.

Django Unchained is Quentin Tarantino’s latest film and if I were to horrendously oversimplify is Inglorious Basterds set in the Deep South before the Civil War. Tarantino is probably one of Hollywood’s bravest directors and each of his films comes with his signature touch. Django Unchained is no different and thus makes the mark as one of the best films of 2012.

Set two years prior to the Civil War, the film opens with a group of slaves being transported from a recent auction. The buyers are stopped by Dr. King Schultz (Christopher Waltz) who is especially interested in one of the slaves, Django (Jamie Foxx). After several liters of blood being spilled, Django and Schultz tie up to become a bounty hunting team and in return Django becomes a free black man. The two then set off to rescue Django’s wife, Hildi (Kerry Washington) from plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

For me Tarantino’s films are like an epic poem.  The characters are larger than life and the screenplay is elevated to another level thanks to the exquisite background score. In most films there are one or two sequences that stand out, but in Django Unchained there are more sequences than I could keep track of. And as is common in Tarantino’s movies, violence plays a integral supporting character with his trademark style of bloodshed coming fast and heavy. This is definitely not the movie for the weak stomached but even I who doesn’t particularly enjoy violence-heavy movies, found this film to be great.

As with his previous movies, Django Unchained is full of stellar performances from the gifted cast. Jamie Foxx is incredibly believable as Django but it’s Christopher Waltz’ Schultz who is my favorite. Special mention for Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the despicable Candie with such flair that you actually want to root for him.

If you haven’t seen Django yet, make it a priority to catch it in the cinemas and then watch it again upon the DVD release. This is one of 2012′s movies you won’t want to miss.

Red Carpet Coverage: People’s Choice Awards 2013

It’s been some time since the People’s Choice Awards took place, but I figured it’s never too late to stop and fawn over some gorgeous dresses and criticize the ugly ones.

The People’s Choice Awards are meant to be hipper than the typical red carpets like the Critics’ Choice Awards, so it’s nice to see some celebrities take risks. However, we’ll always have a good share of the boring black dresses as well, so let’s start with the long ones. Unfortunately, none of the looks struck a chord with me and even the normally stunning Heidi Klum looks rather dull.

People Choice Black Long Red Carpet Coverage: Peoples Choice Awards 2013

On the shorter side there were even more monstrosities. Winners Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock got my vote for worst dressed and most disappointing respectively. Sandra Bullock could’ve done better if that skirt had been hemmed a little higher. That being said, I loved Katy Perry’s Valentino creation which is an elegant departure from her usual style.

People Choice Black Short Red Carpet Coverage: Peoples Choice Awards 2013

Where there is black, white can’t remain far behind. It seems like simple silhouettes were of choice with Morena Baccarin of Homeland fame taking a risk with a Donna Karan Atelier pant suit that I happened to like. Continue reading

Red Carpet Coverage: Critics’ Choice Awards 2013

It’s that time of the year when all the celebrities wear their best gowns and strut the red carpet for the annual awards season. First up this year let’s take a look at the red carpet hits and misses from the Critics’ Choice Awards 2013.

As with every red carpet, there were a lot of floor-length gowns. While I was disappointed that the normally glamorous Eva Longoria gave an average look, Helen Hunt surprised with a sexy, lace-cut red gown.

Critics Choice Long Red Carpet Coverage: Critics Choice Awards 2013

I am of the mind that dresses should either be super long or short. There were a few women that could have fared better had the hemlines been different, namely Emily Blunt if longer and Marion Cotillard if shorter. Continue reading

Music Monday: In My City – Priyanka Chopra

Bollywood stars heading westwards is nothing new.

Aishwarya Rai tried her luck with Bride & Prejudice, Irrfan Khan is a household name thanks to The Namesake and The Amazing Spider-man, along with Anil Kapoor thanks to Slumdog Millionaire, the TV series, 24 . Next year, Amitabh Bachchan will make his Hollywood debut with The Great Gatsby.

On the musical front, A.R. Rahman won two Oscars and two Grammys for his work in Slumdog Millionaire. Now another star is off to conquer the west with her voice – Priyanka Chopra. She unveiled her first single “In My City” as part of the NFL Kickoff.

In case the video wasn’t enough, you can listen to her full single below. For me, this reminded me of the worst of Britney/Gaga/Spice Girls combined, but you never know what Priyanka Chopra and her sultry looks can accomplish in the West.

Coming Soon: Teri Meri Kahaani & Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Summer blockbuster season is definitely upon us. While we’ve been a little swamped and only managed to catch Men in Black III (a very entertaining watch) and Prometheus (still figuring that one out but recommended for Alien fans) so far, but we’ll definitely be heading to the cinema this weekend for the latest releases.

teri meri kahaani 187x300 Coming Soon: Teri Meri Kahaani & Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

This week’s Bollywood release is Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani starring Priyanka Chopra and our all-time favorite Shahid Kapoor featuring love stories across three different time periods.

Teri Meri Kahaani brings together Shahid and Priyanka after their last release Kaminey. The music is already a hit with chartbusters with our personal favorite being “Humse Pyaar Karle Tu”.

The world premiere of Teri Meri Kahaani will also be taking place in  our backyard at VOX cinemas in Mall of Emirates on June 20th. Don’t forget to head over to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Shahid Kapoor!

abraham lincoln vampire hunter 212x300 Coming Soon: Teri Meri Kahaani & Abraham Lincoln: Vampire HunterThis week’s Hollywood release is an interesting one, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Now admittedly we are fans of anything that has to do with vampires having seen all episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and The Vampire Diaries but the 16th president of the United States as a vampire slayer is still beyond my imagination.

That being said, having caught the theatrical trailer in 3D during Prometheus, I’m very interested in this one. Can you imagine if they started teaching about Lincoln’s vampire battles during high school American history classes? I’m sure students’ grades would skyrocket upwards!

So which movie are you planning to catch this weekend? Vote below:

And since we adore Shahid, we leave you with a snippet of Teri Meri Kahaani - complete with English subtitles.
