Event Alert: Jumeirah Restaurant Week

jumeirah restaurant week 2013 Event Alert: Jumeirah Restaurant Week

If there is one thing that I love about Dubai in recent years, it’s the rapid expansion of the food scene. Dubai is home to some great international restaurants (think Nobu or Zuma) as well as smaller, but just as good hole-in-the-wall joints. Last year Dubai got it’s very own Restaurant Week thanks to the folks at Jumeirah!

For those uninitiated to Restaurant Week, it’s is a popular concept in cities like LA and NYC. Throughout this week, selected restaurants setup a prix fixe (fixed price) menus for lunch and dinner. It allows diners to try out expensive, never-visited restaurants at a reasonable prices. Restaurants can take this as an opportunity to showcase house favorites and win over more regulars for the next year. Continue reading

Event Alert: Fabel in Dubai for CKone Shock

image009 Event Alert: Fabel in Dubai for CKone ShockEven though I’m a die-hard Dubai-an, sometimes the city seems a little too tidy to me. I miss the graffiti that I got used to seeing all around while living in Los Angeles.  So if you don’t have graffiti in Dubai, what do you do? Bring the world-famous graffiti artist FABEL to Dubai!

In association with CKone, Fabel will be visiting Faces and Sephora in Dubai this coming weekend to personalize CKone Shock Street Edition bottles.  For every CKone Shock Street Edition Eau de Toilette purchased (AED 230), FABEL will graffiti your name in the back!

Tried & Tested: Restronaut

I’m ancient by Dubai standards. While most people consider themselves old-timers if they’ve lived here for 5 years, next year I’ll be celebrating 20 years of living in Dubai. And as much as I love Dubai, there are a few pitfalls of living here that long, which especially affect your social life.

For one, it’s a fairly transient city so most people only end up staying for a few years at a time. And it’s a small and cliquey city – you generally only socialize with people who you work with or have known for years. So after all these years, when I’m craving something fresh in my social circle, what do I do? Enter Restronaut – Dubai’s latest startup that promises to “make social, social again.”

Tried & Tested: The Cure Beauty Spa

While there are hundreds of salons and spas in Dubai, the best ones are those that are (a) convenient and (b) have quality services. One such spa that has both of these qualities is The Cure Beauty Spa.

Located in the heart of Media City (DMC10 – the BBC World building – same as Sumo Sushi), The Cure is a perfect retreat for all those women working in the Media City/Internet City areas who need a quick pampering session during their lunch break or before an evening event.

A few weeks back, the lovely Tash of TishTash PR arranged a pampering session for bloggers at The Cure. I was in the midst of errands so went for a basic manicure.  I generally prefer to manicure my own nails but if I’m testing out a new salon, I always ask for a no-polish, buff manicure to see if the therapists know the basics of a good manicure: cuticle grooming and filing. I’m happy to report that I enjoyed the experience and had shiny nails without the usual cuticle peeling for a good three weeks. I’m even tempted to go back and checkout the Ear Candling therapy – read the full review here by Emilie of GlamBox Middle East.

The Cure also has an interesting promo going on every month and for February you can take advantage of The Date Night Pamper Box. Find them on Facebook for more information on their latest promo.

The Cure is open from 9 am to 8 pm, Saturday to Thursday and from 10 am to 7 pm on Fridays. You can book an appointment by calling 04-391-6485.

Beauty 101 with Johnson & Johnson

Johnsons Beauty 101 4 300x298 Beauty 101 with Johnson & JohnsonBlogging means I attend a fair number of events. I’ll come home and give my mum first pick of the goodie bag but I’ve never had her ask me to attend an event. But last week, when I returned from the Beauty 101 event with Johnson & Johnson, she definitely wished she had attended.

That itself shows the USP of J&J. J&J is a brand that has something for every age group. When I was a kid, I remember us stocking up bottles of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo & Conditioner in bulk. At Beauty 101, I was reintroudced to three brands.

Clean & Clear

Clean & Clear is targeted to young teens and adults in their early 20s. I wish I had access to this brand when I was younger because if there is one thing I regret is exposing my skin to excessively strong products early in my life. Teenage skin is still developing so you can get away with mild cleansing products and a good skincare routine. Even those with excessive acne can take advantage of their formulas which help keep Clean & Clear. Their papaya extrta exfoliating wash has already made its way into my routine.

Dollz Tip for Teenagers: Avoid touching your face with your fingers. Oil and dirt can cause even worse acne breakouts.

Neutrogena

If I had to pick a favorite J&J brand, it has to be Neutrogena. For years, I would bring back bottles of their cleansers and exfoliators from the US and I’m so excited that they’ve expanded their product offerings here. I absolutely love the Grapefruit range that controls oil production and prevents acne.  My mom is a believer in pure organic skincare but even she has several Neutrogena products in her bathroom at all times. And this isn’t surprising considering that Neutrogena is the preferred brand for dermatologists.

Dollz Tip for Acne-Prone Skin: If you suffer from back acne (bacne), use Neutrogena’s Grapefruit wash as a body wash. Just allow the formula to penetrate the skin for a few minutes before rinsing off.

Johnson’s

The Johnson’s adult line was a revelation to me. I still head to the baby section to pick up my stock of baby oil and baby wipes on a regular basis. I prefer baby oil as a moisturizer and the wipes are a must-have for removing makeup. But now J&J have come up with an adult line for those of us who are having trouble growing up! The body cream is a lightweight yet nourishing and might be replacing my bottle of baby oil. And they also have a range of facial wipes for makeup removal for those who may not be sold on the baby wipe concept.

Dollz Tip for Makeup Removal: For healthy skin, it’s important to let your skin breathe. Stash a pack of Johnson’s Facial Wipes in your gym bag and wipe your face off before you workout. Post-workout, wipe down your face and décolletage to prevent any acne caused by the sweat.

Thanks Natasha from Tish Tash and the J&J team for taking me back to Beauty 101. Sometimes its important to be reminded of the basics once in a while.
