2012 Beauty Awards: Best in Hair & Body

I hope you’ve been enjoying this series so far. This segment focuses on my favorites for hair and body. I will start this with a disclaimer that I believe products in this segment are very personal things – what works for one person may not work for another. So do share if you agree/disagree with these choices.

Shampoo & Conditioner

WINNER: Kérastase Nutritive – I was introduced to the Kérastase range by the brand itself thanks to a bloggers feature. In the past 2 years, I’ve tried other shampoos and conditioners but this remains the favorite I return to. If you still aren’t convinced about the benefits of salon products, it’s worth starting with Kérastase.

  • Honorable Mention: Davines – If you prefer a natural/organic formula, Davines is a great option. I like to alternate between two formulas so this currently is taking up bathroom shelf space. Read the full review here.

2012 Beauty Awards: Best in Skincare

The best painting needs a clean canvas to start with. In the same way, to get the most out of your makeup, you need a great base. And that’s where the importance of skincare comes in.

Makeup Remover

WINNER: Bioderma Sensibio H2O Makeup Remover & Cleanser - A favorite of models and beauty bloggers across the globe, this has been my go-to remover for the past 2 years. It’s come to the point where I buy it in the largest packaging available. The most gentle makeup remover, it is perfect for daily use and takes off mascara and eyeliner in a cinch. Unlike other removers, there is no irritation and no tightness. Available at most pharmacies in the UAE.

  • Honorable Mention: Mac Cleanse Off Oil – Bioderma is great for almost all cases but if you’re doing a lot of heavy makeup or using waterproof products, you need an oil-based product. This is where Mac’s Cleanse Off Oil will cut through the heaviest makeup. The best way to apply is using a pre-moistened wipe that allows the oil to emulsify into a cleansing fluid.

2012 Beauty Awards: Best in Nails

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I have a bit of an obsession with my nails, as demonstrated by my multiple #notd posts. And while I do enjoy the occasional trip to the manicurist, I’ve built up a toolkit to allow me to maintain my nails at home. So in Part 3 of the 2012 Beauty Awards, there won’t be any winners but I’ll be sharing my favorite nail products.

Orly Cutique Cuticle Remover – A discovery at Beautyworld ME, this makes at-home mani’s a cinch. No more annoying hangnails or build up of cuticles.

Seche Vite Top Coat – The holy grail in top coats. I picked this up at Beautyworld last year and it’s still going strong. It has a strong alcohol smell so apply in a well-ventilated area but it dries up within a few seconds.

Sephora Glass Nail File – I must have gone through a hundred emery boards by now but as an impulse, I picked up this during the summer. These file your nails in a jiff and last forever. I wihs I had discovered these earlier.

Bourjois Nail Polish Remover – When you need to get rid of the chipped polish in a flash, this is a savior. No need to hunt for cotton pads and be worried of spills. Bonus, the fruity scent and oil-based formula leave your nails in top condition. Special mention to Zoya Remove+, my basic polish remover that comes in a pump bottle, and Boots Polish Wipes, which are a must-have while traveling.

Nailstation Drying Drops – Even when I’m having a manicure done in the salon, I have these in my handbag. They cut the drying time in half. Dollz Tip – use them between each coat if you’re in a really hurry.

And now for the actual nail polishes! I think nail color is a very personal thing and more often than not, I use it as a mood enhancer. However, there are a few brands that I’m partial to.

Chanel – Overpriced, definitely. But they are the trendsetters for the seasons colors. I’m a fan of their jelly finishes, especially Morning Rose (LE) being a favorite this past year with its gold shimmer pink. Unfortunately, most of the new collections sell out within days of arrival.

Christian Dior – I picked up my first bottle of CD with the blue-green St. Tropez. The formula is average but I’m a fan of the oval, oversized brushes. And they too are catching up with Chanel by putting out some unique color offerings.

Deborah Lippmann – I call these the party polishes. When in NYC this summer, I dedicated one afternoon to finding Bloomingdales, just so I could shop the entire collection. I love the jelly glitters/sequined polishes. In case you haven’t discovered this brand, start with Across the Universe or Ruby Red Slippers. Available in the UAE at NBar.

A-England – A boutique brand based in the UK that delivers to the UAE! Amazing formula with some really unique colors. Check out the glossy red Perceival or the gold-green Princess Sabra.

Rescue Beauty Lounge – Another boutique polish brand from the USA. Pricey but great formula and some unique colors that sell out quickly. My pick is the grey Concrete Jungle and they also produce my favorite matte top coat.

2012 Beauty Awards: Best in Lips

Continuing on with the 2012 Beauty Awards, today we discuss my favorite – lips! In case you missed the previous segments:

Lipstick

WINNER: Tom Ford Lip Color in Casablanca & Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl - I’m a lipstick junkie so it’s no surprise that there are two winners for this category.

Overpriced, yes. Worth the price, most definitely. Tom Ford lipsticks are what I’d call the gold standard in lipsticks. The packaging is luxe and the formula is impeccable. I also found the perfect lipstick shade for me in Casablanca. My only crib – there are very few stores that sell Tom Ford Beauty. In Dubai, check out Harvey Nichols.

I feel like I finally grew up with beauty this year as I embraced red lipstick and for the perfect red pout it has to be Nars Dragon Girl. The pencil means application is easy and the formula lasts through several glasses of wine. I usually wear it matte but for a bolder look try with a layer of gloss on top.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Nars Schiap – It’s really unfair that Nars is no longer sold in the UAE and I really hope it makes a comeback in 2013. Schiap is the perfect bubblegum pink and the matte finish makes it easier to wear. I have backups of this one, just in case they ever stop selling it.
  • MAC Lady Danger – This completes the bright lipstick trio. Not for the faint hearted, this red-orange works great on olive skin tones.

Lip Gloss

WINNER: Buxom Lip Polish in Margarita - Disclaimer, I’m not a lip gloss junkie and tend to use one clear gloss with all looks. This was an impulse buy to test out a lip plumping formula. I love the tingly feeling and the slightly extra touch of fullness it brings to the lips. Works great when paired with any of the Nars Velvet Matte Pencils.

2012 best lipgloss 2012 Beauty Awards: Best in Lips

Honorable Mentions:

  • Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Enchanted – Great for the understated lip. I keep this in my work bag as a backup for makeup emergencies. Again, not available in the UAE but I’ve heard Clinique Chubby Sticks are a good alternative.
  • Dolce & Gabbana Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick in Iridescent - One may argue this isn’t a lip gloss but the balm, lipstick combo gives a glossy effect and it lasts longer than the traditional lip glosses.
  • Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey – An old favorite. They recently launched the Almost Lipstick formula in a range of colors but Black Honey remains my favorite. The perfect shade of MLBB (my lips but better).

Lip Balm

WINNER: Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm - A favorite of renowned beauty blogger, Temptalia, I could finally see what the fuss was about. Easy tube application and a formula which doesn’t build-up but still moisturizes. Especially great is the SPF 25 formula. Unfortunately another brand which isn’t available in the Middle East. Fun fact – this brand is geared towards the men!

  • Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment – One of the those samples that I’ve grown to love. The scent is amazing and it’s found a place at my bedside table. Comes in tinted colors too. Also, not available in the UAE.
  • Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 – The only lip balm available locally that I like. Comes in a basic unscented version but doubles up as a cuticle cream as well.

Lip Scrub

I’ve only used one lip scrub so far but I love Lush Mint Julips. The minty sugar mix makes my lips feel amazing and tastes delicious during accidental ingestion.

Next up in this series are my picks for Best in Nails.

2012 Beauty Awards: Best in Face

Continuing on with the 2012 Beauty Awards, today I share Part 2, with my favorite face products. In case you missed it, here is Part 1 on the Best in Eye.

Foundation

WINNER: Clinique Even Better – I’ve been using Clinique for years now and it’s one of the first foundations I ever used. Even when I stray I can’t help but come back to this one. Perfect for everyday use. Read the full review here.
