The 71st Golden Globes this past week kicked off the 2014 awards season with a bang. Let’s take a look at the first red carpet coverage for the year and take a look at the gorgeous dresses that the stars chose this year.
First up we start with the ladies who showed up with an extra accessory – their pregnancy baby bump! Between Kerry Washington, Olivia Wilde and Drew Barrymore, all three ladies aced their looks but Drew Barrymore’s Monique Lhuillier creation is my favorite. Also I can’t help but look forward to Kerry’s post-baby appearance as I love her style, especially as Olivia Pope in Scandal.
Next up is the red carpet staple, black! A lot of the fashionable ladies opted for this safe color this year. While most outfits looked safe or borderline boring (looking at you Sofia Vergara, Uma Thurman), I loved Julianna Marguiles in Andrew Gn and Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen. But the best in black has to be Lizzie Kaplan (of Masters of Sex) fame who looked breathtaking in her Emilio Pucci ensemble with gold knitted sleeves. Unfortunately for Julia Roberts, she took her safe strapless Dolce & Gabanna outfit and make it matronly by wearing a collared white shirt underneath – disappointing.
Several ladies opted for the bright red hue which I always love. 12 years a Slave (read my review here) star Lupita Nyong’o knocked it out of the park with her cape dress from Ralph Lauren. For me, this simple but structured look easily won the night as best dressed. I also equally loved Emma Watson’s Dior outfit which consisted of a backless, belted dress paired with cropped pants. The funky outfit is one that I can see in my wardrobe and would be wearable in real life. Also, isn’t it amazing how good Julia-Louis Dreyfus (Veep, Enough Said – both a must-watch) looks despite being 50+ and that outfit works for her 100 percent!
Neutrals were popular this year including Jennifer Lawrence, winner of Best Supporting Actress for American Hustle and undoubtedly, the most popular actress these days. Her Dior creation was nice, but underwhelming like Zooey Deschanel’s beaded creation. Margot Robbie’s Gucci number did the best in the group but Paula Patton’s Stephanie Rolland monstrosity scored as Worst Dressed in my books.
Some of the ladies decided to push the envelope with bright hues, which I always love. I adroed Catlin Fitzgerald’s Emilia Wickstead blue dress that channeled the same era as her show Masters of Sex and was one of the pleasant surprises on the red carpet. However, Sandra Bullock disappointed in Prabal Gurung’s confusing satin creation. Wrinkles never look good so I really wish designers would stop using this fabric! Still her makeup and hair made Sandy B look stunning as always.
Two trends I noticed on the red carpet this year – floral prints and metallics. I’m a big fan of florals and loved the pattern on both Kaley Cuoco and Zosia Mamet’s dresses but the lack of styling made them fall flat. Sometimes the right accessories and makeup can really make or break a look. All the metallic outfits worked for me and it’s hard to pick which one I loved more!
On the accessories side, nothing stuck out at me. But I loved Amber Heard’s bronze makeup that was done using Hourglass cosmetics (please bring this brand to Dubai). The chocolate, rosy eyes all comes together with her peachy complexion and brown hair. Not sure if I could pull this off but am definitely going to try!
So what did you think of this year’s Golden Globe awards fashion? Some nice turnout but not the best I’ve seen so looking forward to more dramatic looks at the next event. I haven’t caught the full telecast of the awards yet or even seen all the films nominated yet but that’s on this weekend’s to do list.
