Review: Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

Dermalogica-microfoliant-review-3Having a smooth, clean base is the foundation for a flawless complexion. No matter how much makeup you pile on, if the foundation isn’t clean, it won’t help. That’s why I try to use an exofilator everyday.

Earlier I preferred manual exfoliators such as walnut or sea salt scrubs. While these left my skin with a “clean” feeling, I felt I was being too aggressive with my skin (which would lead to wrinkles sooner) and my pores were still being neglected. Enter Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant, which takes a refreshingly different approach to exfoliation.

Instead of a normal gel or cream-based formula, Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is a powder-based formula, very similar to body powder/talcum powder, but is made of rice bran and rice extracts. You dispense the powder (about half a teaspoon is enough) and then turn it into a paste with water. Scrub this over your face for a few minutes and rinse. Voilà, your face is perfectly exfoliated!

During the contact with water, ingredients like Papain enzyme, Phytic and Salicylic acid are released. Thinking back to my chemical engineering days, the fact that these active ingredients are activiated just a few seconds before application, makes this formula more effective (in my pseudo-scientific opinion) than regular “wet” formulas that may have been packaged months or years ago.

Immediately from the first use, I noticed smoother and brighter skin. After a few days of usage, I noticed that my skin was maintaing its smoothness. My only word of caution is it takes a few tries to figure out the adequate amount of product needed and how to best use it. Admittedly  I’m not a fan of the packaging that can sometimes dispense more product than you need. However, don’t give up after the first try as you’ll get better at this. It’s also best to store this away from the sink/tub to prevent accidental exposure of the full bottle to water.

That being said, Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is a fresh perspective on exfoliation and one that I’ll be sticking too for some time to come. I definitely recommend you give this a try.
