Tuesday Tip – Issue 21 – Lash Moisturizer

Dry skin – moisturize. Dry hair – condition. Dry air – humidifier.

Thanks to the extreme climate and constant air conditioning, those of us living in the Middle East have to continuously battle dry skin, hair and more. Even your eyelashes aren’t spared!

Thanks to the daily use of mascara and eye-makeup remover, I noticed my lashes were getting more brittle day by day. First I thought that it was caused by mascara but then someone clued me into a tip – using Vaseline to moisturize!

Vaseline, a.k.a. petroleum jelly, makes a great lash moisturizer. After you finish your nightly cleansing ritual, just slather on a bit of Vaseline on your lashes. Not only will they start looking great, but you’ll find your mascara will perform much better. Don’t wait too long after cleansing though because you want your lashes to be damp for the Vaseline to lock the moisture in.

The only thing to be wary of is that Vaseline also makes a great makeup remover. So before you apply your eye makeup the next morning, thoroughly clean up with your favorite cleanser!

News: UGG Launches Bridal Collection

wedding topRight 300x236 News: UGG Launches Bridal CollectionWedding season is here! This year I’m especially excited since I’ll be attending my first Christian wedding and getting to be a bridesmaid for my BFF. The whole concept of a western wedding is foreign for me so I’ve been doing a lot of research and that’s when I came across UGG’s Bridal Collection.

The most hated-loved shoe line from Australia has launched a capsule collection that will allow brides to walk down the aisle in comfort: either in a sequined or leather signature UGG boot or fluffy flip flop.

Now while these do look comfortable, I would much rather go with a pair of sparkly flats. But knowing the craze for UGGs, I wouldn’t be surprised if these sold out.

On the Shopping List: Guerlain by Pucci

I love spoiling my loved ones but even more than others, I love spoiling myself! Post the misery of watching Dangerous Ishhq, I needed a serious pick-me-up. So about 10 minutes before Harvey Nichols was closing, I wandered in to do some credit card damage.

While this speed shopping trip included several items, my buy of the week has to be from the Guerlain Terra Azzurra Collection by Emilio Pucci, specifically the Météorites Perles D’azur Illuminating Powder in Pure Radiance (available for AED 261).

After hearing many fabulous reviews of Guerlain’s Meteorites, I’ve been wanting to purchase them for some time but holding off since I never use highlighters. But after seeing the gorgeous packaging of this limited edition item, I had to splurge.

Guerlain’s Meteorites are an extremely fine-milled highlighting powder. They don’t provide coverage but a subtle glow to the face which is very complimenting. As summer picks up, I like my makeup light and these work really well with my tinted moisturizer.

There are quite a few more pieces in the collection that may grab your interest. To shop the collection, visit Harvey Nichols at Mall of Emirates.

Rant: What’s wrong with Indian society

Disclaimer: This is going to be an opinionated rant. Take it or leave it.

The one thing I get the most from people when I meet them for the first time: ”OMG, you’re Indian. I would have never guessed!”

Over the years I’ve blamed this comment over my pale skin, blondish hair, excessive height and thick American accent. But recently I’ve realized that perhaps it’s been a conscious move to distance myself from my ethnicity.

It’s not that I hate India or being Indian – I love our movies, food, cricket, and culture. What I cannot stand is how Indian society treats women, with the following clip being a perfect example of it:

For those of you a little lost, the above clip shows some of Indian televisions most popular female stars playing a game against each other to see who can touch the maximum number of feet in a set amount of time. You read that right, a game involving touching your feet.

In Indian culture, when a girl gets married and moves to her marital home, she is expected to touch the feet of all her elders as a mark of respect. In the few Indian weddings I’ve attended, I’ve seen the poor brides dressed in outfits weighing several kilos have to touch the feet of an endless line of aunties and uncles. What’s the point of this? The same women bitch about the aunties/uncles the minute they are left alone. So how does this promote respect and reverence?

I know there is a high likelihood that I’ll be pushed to do the same if I ever do get married one day but if I can help it, I won’t let my future daughter ever be subjected to the same.

Tuesday Tip – Issue 20 – Extend Your Manicure

I always imagined that when I grew up I’d be that perfectly put-together woman with a high-powered job, professional outfit and perfectly manicured nails. While the first two I’m working towards, the third I can never seem to master.

No matter what combination of polishes I use, my nails chip very easily. And since I’m too lazy (or too in love with the color), I will carry on with chipped nails and that we know isn’t very ladylike.

Last week, I had gotten a gorgeous lilac (Essie’s She’s Picture Perfect) manicure. However, by the end of the weekend it had already become marred by chips. Since I couldn’t be bothered with a full mani, I decided to resurrect it by adding on a navy blue french tip (Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Dead Calm).

While it didn’t turn out perfect, I definitely liked the look and can see this coming in handy in rush situations. And in case you aren’t steady with your hands like me, use this handy tool for the perfect french mani.
