The Golden Globes is officially the first big event of the season and a whole host of stars came for this. Since there were so many dresses that caught our eye, myself and Banana each picked our hits and misses. That turned out to be harder than we thought! Then there were a few that one of us liked and one of us hated! Read on for the red carpet roundup.
- Ariel Winter in Dolce & Gabanna
D: She may only be 13 but she absolutely nails it in this purple number. Age appropriate yet sexy.
B: She looks cute–like an up-side-down tulip! I would’ve preferred a slightly less puffy bottom, though.
- Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka
D: I’m not a fan of full-sleeved gowns but this one shows you exactly how to wear one. Elegant yet stylish enough to be worn at any age.
B: Helen looks like a class act in this dress. The bottom detailing is intriguing but not overwhelming, and the deep blue hue is ultra flattering.
- Sarah Hyland in Dolce & Gabanna
D: Another young one absolutely killing it on the red carpet. Love the black and nude lace combination.
B: Agreed! Her side chignon hair style is great, as well. Very sexy and classy!
- Nicole Richie in Julien Macdonald
B: Nicole’s dress is super glamorous–looks amazing from the front and back! Hair and make-up are fabulous, too!
D: I like this too. A nice refreshing change from the chiffon ball gowns but still glamourous.
- Honorable Mentions
D: Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann, Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang, Stacey Kiebler in Valentino, Nicole Kidman in Versace, Charlize Theron in Dior, Diane Lane in Reem Acra, Uggie the Dog!
B: Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang, Charlize Theron in Dior, Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji
HITS or MISSES?
- Angelina Jolie in Versace
D: HIT – I’m really not an Angelina fan but I can’t help but say she looks phenomenal in this dress. Perfection.
B: MISS – Too dramatic. I mean, she looks like the title of her film–Blood and Honey!
- Diana Agron in Giles Deacon
D: HIT – I love red and I love lace. Diana takes a risk but nails it in this laser cut gown and yet doesn’t let the dress overpower her.
B: MISS – I love the laser cutouts, but the cascading layers on bottom are too much. I forgot to look at her face, the dress was so overwhelming!
- Julie Bowen in Reem Acra
D: HIT – Absolutely gorgeous. Simple and enhances her minimal chest.
B: MISS – Olivia Wilde actually wore this same dress in silver to the ’08 Emmys! And to make it worse, Olivia wore it better. Don’t like Julie’s hair–makes her look old!
- Michelle Williams in Jason Wu
D: MISS – She’s such a pretty girl but this velvet monstrosity manages to age her.
B: HIT – I liked Michelle’s dress–very vintage and elegant! And the hairband was a great touch!
- Zooey Deschanel in Prada
D: HIT – I love it when stars embrace their personalities. Only Zooey could have carried off this look. But I wish she had opted for an updo.
B: MISS – This dress reminds me of the rhinestoned-covered phone of a 13 year-old girl. Maybe the dress looks better in person?
- Jessica Alba in Gucci
B: HIT – Jessica is glowing gorgeousness! What a hot momma! The blush-lilac color of her dress compliments her hair and skin beautifully.
D: MISS – I like this from afar but the print looks kind of cheapy. She is glowing though.
- Lea Michele in Marchesa
B: HIT – Wow! Amazing dress that hugs in all the right places–thankfully! Otherwise we may worry about a wardrobe malfunction.
D: MISS – Not a fan. It’s like an aluminum foiled version of Halle Berry’s 2002 Oscars dress. I wish she had chosen softer makeup to balance out the dress.
- Salma Hayek in Gucci
D: I like the ombre hair, I like the gold bustier, and I like the black sequined skirt. But put them all together, you get a not-so-hot mess.
B: With the pattern, the pleats, and all the sequins, it’s just too much!
- Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen
D: Boring dress, boring hair and non existent accessories. Put some effort!
B: Reese looks pretty glam, but she didn’t bring her A-game. The dress matches the red carpet so well and her hair and make-up are so minimal that there’s no focal point to draw one’s attention.
- Piper Perabo in Theory
D: Dishrag color, transparent fabric and so tight it flattens her already flat chest. What was she thinking??
B: Yeah, isn’t it kind of redundant if something is nude colored and transparent? And the bottom was far too puffy.
- Natalie Portman in Lanvin
D: Every year, someone insists on ruining a great dress with an unnecessary bustle. Love the color though.
B: I could buy a look-a-like dress in the prom section of the local department store. For a custom-made Lanvin, this was not a great demonstration of their abilities.
- Freida Pinto in Prada
D: Gorgeous color but way too poofy. I don’t understand why stars don’t pick outfits that flatter their shape.
B: This dress is just asking for pregnancy rumors to start swirling!
- Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen
D: Way too much fabric. High neck, long sleeves and a mermaid skirt is a little too much. The fabric also seems to be constricting her and I still don’t understand the grey hair.
B: Agreed. I’ll also add to the offense list the pointy should pads! So not flattering!
- Jessica Biel in Elie Saab
B: Make-up, hair, and dress are all a disappointment. I hope the future Mrs. Timberlake picks a better white dress for her wedding!
D: Agreed. Where’s the sparkle and glamour from the normally radient Jessica?
